Unlike ceramic or traditional metal braces, Invisalign takes a more modernistic approach to straightening a patient’s teeth. Although they are oftentimes referred to as Invisalign clear braces, this is a misnomer as they are a series of aligner trays that you wear over your teeth and have been customized to fit each patient individually. They are made from a virtually invisible plastic material that is comfortable to wear and smooth to the touch.
Invisalign vs. Traditional Braces
Sidhu Family Dentistry offers both Invisalign clear trays and traditional metal braces. While both of these dental appliances have their obvious differences, both provide the same end result – straightened teeth. However, there are 4 primary advantages that Invisalign clear trays have over the more traditional metal braces including:
Appearance – because metal braces are bulky and comprised of brackets and wires, they can make your mouth look unattractive. Conversely, people will barely notice that you are wearing Invisalign trays because they are almost invisible.
Comfort – anyone who has ever worn braces will tell you that traditional metal braces are very uncomfortable to wear. Plus, they can never be removed until the orthodontic treatment is completed. If you want to brush and floss your teeth as well as drink and eat, you can remove your Invisalign trays.
Safety – the protruding brackets and wires that metal braces are made with can puncture and scratch your gums and the inside of your mouth, causing additional pain and discomfort. On the other hand, Invisalign trays are smooth and comfortable.
Treatment period – depending on the individual and the severity of the issue, a person may have to wear traditional metal braces for up to 5 years. In most of the cases that we have treated here at Sidhu Family Dentistry, the patient’s treatment with Invisalign trays takes between 12 to 18 months.
Are You a Candidate for Invisalign Clear Trays?
The biggest determinant of candidacy for Invisalign clear trays is what you are trying to fix and the severity of your particular case. In the more severe cases, Invisalign is not a good option. However, given a lack of severity, the clear trays can treat and correct:
- crowded teeth
- gapped teeth
Age is another determining factor as you must be an adult or older teenager to wear Invisalign clear trays. Conversely, they are not recommended for young children and younger teenagers as their teeth may still be growing and they do not have all of their permanent teeth.
